Our Current Work

Working for individuals & families

The Courage Center is making tremendous efforts to fill the gaps in recovery services in the Midlands:

  • We have announced our expansion into Orangeburg.

  • We are planning a family recovery coach training class in May.

  • At our Lexington location on Park Road, we continue to offer family recovery support meetings, family recovery coaching session, peer recovery support, and all recovery meetings.

  • At our Richland location on Broad River Road, we offer family recovery support meetings, peer support meetings and all recovery meetings. We will be offering HIV testing in house by the end of this year.

  • We are working with the solicitor’s office and their arbitration program to help youth offenders charged with substance use and possession.

  • We are providing peer support and SBIRT assessments for Prisma Hospital and we will be also offering peer recovery support to overdose patients at Lexington Medical Center.

  • We are continuing our work with Lexington EMS, and are conducting post overdose home visits to patients and their families.

  • We have a Harm Reduction team with a van route. This has our coaches visiting neighborhoods as well as unhoused communities to distribute NARCAN, Fentanyl test strips, and other harm reduction and hygiene items.

  • We are working with the Probation Pardon and Parole office in Lexington and Richland to provide peer support and virtual recovery meetings for people who are criminal justice system involved.

  • We have conducted family recovery coach training classes in Newberry and Orangeburg for interested individuals and are looking to start a family support meeting there. In addition, we trained the family services employees at Lifebridge to help them understand substance use and the impact on families to augment their family services.

  • We trained peer support specialists in partnerships with Gamecock Recovery, Allen University Collegiate Recovery, and Lutheran Family Services of the Carolinas.

  • We are offering Virtual Recovery meetings at the WeCo Cottage collegiate recovery housing in West Columbia.

  • We are working with schools in Lexington/Richland 5, Lexington 1, and Lexington 2 to develop programs for students who test positive for substances and will offer life skills and education as well as recovery coaching.

  • We are also working to fill the gaps in mental health services in our area. We have a licensed professional counselor who two days a week works with young adults for both substance use and mental health issues. In addition, we have partnered with USC and are working with a PhD psychology fellow who is part of the Supporting Substance Use Disorder Services in South Carolina Center at USC. This center is designed to address the critical shortage of psychologists trained to prevent and treat opioid addiction and substance use disorders. She is providing counseling for teens and adults with substance use issues. Finally, we have an intern Marriage and Family Therapist who is in her final stages of being licensed. She sees our family participants two days a week and leads many of our family groups.

All these services are provided AT NO COST. To continue to offer these services we need your help.
